La Mare Wine Estate Wins Bronze at International Wine and Spirits Competition

We are thrilled to announce that La Mare Wine Estate has been awarded a bronze medal at the prestigious International Wine and Spirits Competition (IWSC) for our 2023 vintage of Bailiwick Red Wine. This recognition is a significant milestone in our journey to be recognised as a premier quality wine producer. The Wine Judging panel, led by Sarah Abbott MW, a qualified Master of Wine, ensured that rigorous, impartial standards were upheld throughout the competition.

Soft and playful with bold notes of tart blueberries, peppery cherries, and smoky dark fruits

Bailiwick, our distinctive blend of Rondo and Regent grapes finished in French oak, impressed the IWSC judges with its unique profile. Described as “soft and playful with bold notes of tart blueberries, peppery cherries, and smoky dark fruits,” Bailiwick stands out in the competitive landscape of international wines.

This accolade is especially momentous as it highlights the debut vintage of our talented winemaker, Jordi Sanvicens Moreno. Born and raised in Catalonia, Spain, Jordi holds a bachelor’s degree in Viticulture and Enology and brings sixteen years of global winemaking experience to La Mare. His career includes managing and designing vineyards in Perpignan, the Upper Rhine Valley, Clare Valley in Australia, and even developing vineyards to thrive in Indonesia’s tropical climate.

Meet The Winemaker

Jordi’s extensive experience across diverse climates perfectly aligns with Jersey’s unique terroir. With an average temperature two degrees warmer than southern England and soil acidity similar to Penedes in Spain, Jersey offers an ideal environment for Jordi to craft wines that truly reflect the island’s distinct character.

Jordi shared his excitement, saying, “It’s the first time I have made a red wine that I could enjoy every day! I’m immensely proud of what we have achieved, especially given the significant changes we made to our production methods. We are reshaping the way wine is produced not only in Jersey but also in the UK, by importing and utilising materials rarely used here, such as manno proteins, unique oak blends, and specialised yeasts. We continually refine our techniques, embracing innovative processes to enhance our wines. This forward-thinking approach extends to all our wines, as we strive to develop and perfect future vintages.”

From Grape to Glass

“What makes La Mare special is that everything happens right here—the vines growing, the fruit flowering, processing, harvesting, and bottling. It’s incredibly rewarding to see customers enjoying our wines on the estate. The entire process, from vineyard to glass, completes the full circle, capturing the essence of Jersey in every bottle.”

Tim Crowley, Managing Director of La Mare Wine Estate, added, “I am incredibly proud of Jordi, Andrew our Vineyard Manager, and the entire team’s achievement with Bailiwick. This recognition from the IWSC underscores the step-change in the quality of our wines and our approach to winemaking.”

Bailiwick is available for purchase at La Mare Wine Estate’s Cellar Shop in St Mary, Maison de Jersey in King Street, at the airport, and online at www.maisondejersey.com (Jersey only).
