La Mare Wine Estate Supports the Flower-Insect Timed Count (FIT Count)
We are proud to support the Flower-Insect Timed Count (FIT Count) campaign, which will commence in April 2025. This initiative involves a simple survey aimed at gathering data on the number of insects visiting specific flowers, focusing on a list of 14 target species. The estate is free to enter for anyone who wishes to enjoy nature and contribute to this worthwhile campaign.
The FIT Count encourages participants to spend just ten minutes observing flowers and counting insects during good weather. This can be done in a variety of locations, including gardens and parks, from 1 April to 30 September.
Each count adds valuable data to the overall survey. Conducting multiple counts at the same location will enhance the quality of the information collected. To assist participants, video guides and downloadable materials are available on the Pollinator Project Website.
How to Participate in a FIT Count at La Mare
- Preparation: Counts typically take 10–15 minutes. During this time, participants count every insect that lands on their chosen target flower species.
- Timing: FIT Counts can be performed any time from 1 April to 30 September when weather conditions are favourable—specifically, dry weather with a minimum temperature of 13°C in sunny conditions or 15°C when cloudy.
- Recording Data: Ask for a recording form from our shop or use the FIT Count app to gather and submit data. Choose a single species from the target flower list on the signs next to the counting area or select a different flower if necessary.
- Conducting the Count: Go to the specially prepared 50 × 50 cm area in our magical meadow. Count the number of individual flowers within this patch and set a timer for ten minutes to tally all insects landing on the target flowers, categorising them into broad groups such as bumblebees and hoverflies.
- Submitting Results: After completing a count, pop your form in the special box provided or through the FIT Count app for Android or iOS.
