Grow Your Vines
To ensure your vines thrive, follow these simple steps:
- Choose the Sunniest Spot: Grapevines love sunlight. Select the sunniest area in your garden or patio to plant your vine.
- Planting Depth: Plant the vine as deep as the wax on the stem, leaving about 2-3 inches of the vine above the soil.
- Water It In: After planting, water your vine thoroughly to help it settle into its new home.
Care and Maintenance
Grapevines are relatively low-maintenance once established. Here’s how to care for your new vine:
4. Soil Requirements: Grapevines prefer well-draining soil and do not need fertile soil. There’s no need to add fertiliser or compost.
5. Initial Watering: Jersey’s soils are naturally free-draining, so after the first few waterings, your vine will begin to find its own water.
6. Training the Vine: Use a bamboo cane or a similar support to train your vine vertically
Pruning
First Year: Cut back the current year’s growth to about 4 inches above the wax when the vine is dormant. The best time for this is in February.
Second Year: Continue training the vine vertically using your bamboo cane. Begin topping the vine monthly at 6 feet in height, starting in late July.
Following Winter: Prune the vine back to 4 feet.
Fruit Production
Your patience and care will pay off as your vine matures:
- Year 3: The vine should begin producing fruit.
- Year 4 and Beyond: Construct a frame for your vine to grow on and continue pruning within the frame each winter. Your vine will produce fruit for 15-20 years with proper care.
